The place
The coffee zones of Portuguesa climb the eastern foothills of the Andes, around the towns of Chabasquén (municipality of Unda), Biscucuy (municipality of Sucre) and Ospino. Farms sit between roughly 600 and 1,600 metres, with the higher plots around Chabasquén and Biscucuy.
Acarigua, in the lowlands of the same state, is the logistics centre of the region and of EMMEVI: lots from Portuguesa and neighbouring Lara and Trujillo are received, milled, selected and stored there before export through Puerto Cabello.

Farms and process
Production is in the hands of smallholders and producer associations. Both washed and natural coffees are produced; washed lots are typically fermented overnight and sun-dried, while naturals are dried as whole cherry on patios.
In the cup
Portuguesa coffees are balanced and sweet, with medium body and gentle acidity. Naturals add chocolate and ripe fruit, making them useful as a body component in espresso blends.
Varieties grown in Portuguesa
Container lots are field blends of several cultivars. In Portuguesa the main ones are: Typica, Bourbon, Caturra, Catuaí, Castillo, Colombia 27, Catimor, Monteclaro. See our guide to Venezuelan coffee varieties.
